English as Second Language

Building the capacity of Francophone Africa through English

Why focus on English in French speaking Africa?

Over the past decade there has been a growing trend for French speaking African nations to look towards the English language as a tool towards the economic development of their countries. An article published by Voice of America (voanews.com), Francophone West Africa Increasingly Looking towards English, highlights countries such as The Gabon, Rwanda and Senegal who have integrated English into their school curriculum and are developing continuing education English learning for adults. According to VOA, “some African officials note that French keeps them regionally isolated and if they wish to diversify their global economic interests or partnerships, then English is the best way to do so.”

Africa Our Homes’ ESL approach

Learning English is a good decision for economic and educational advancement. Similar to their global counterparts, many young Francophone West Africans dream of careers with an international organization, to travel abroad or to simply understand movies and the lyrics to their favorite American or British songs. Those who are already established in their careers need English for business travel and to negotiate contracts. To support these goals Africa Our Home provides English training in school settings and through private or small-group coaching sessions.
